More people drowned in Dublin last year than anywhere else in the country – Hayes

16 people drowned in Dublin in 2014 the highest in the country. 17 Dublin beaches patrolled by Lifeguards

Fine Gael MEP for Dublin, Brian Hayes has called on Dubliners to be aware of breaches in the capital which have access to lifeguards. In 2014, 16 people drowned in Dublin – the highest number in the country.

“Last year 114 people drowned in Ireland, 16 in Dublin. This is down from 123 in 2013 of which 20 were in Dublin. We are clearly making progress and much of this is because of the work of Irish Water Safety and the work of the lifeguard service. We need to see more beaches having access to a lifeguard service.

“What is so tragic is that many of these deaths are avoidable. By taking some simple steps parents and families can dramatically reduce the possibility of drowning. It only takes a second for a tragic drowning to occur.”

“I am asking individuals and families to take note of the 17 guarded beaches in our county.  We need to remember that a red and yellow flag tells us the area a lifeguard is patrolling and a red flag says that it is unsafe to swim.” concluded Mr Hayes
