FAI payment small change compared to injustice to Irish football – Hayes

Archives

During a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg this afternoon (Thursday) on the ongoing FIFA corruption allegation, the Fine Gael Dublin MEP, Brian Hayes described the unusual payment to the Football Association of Ireland as small change in comparison to the appalling handling of the 2010 World Cup play-offs.

“In my view the FAI got the best deal it could. In the circumstance where the rules for the play-offs in 2010 were dramatically changed by FIFA at the last minute, the payment to the FAI was the very least that FIFA could have done. As we now know Mr. Blatter, also broke the confidentially clause surrounding this payment.

“Once and for all football needs to clean up its game. While the FIFA payment to the FAI was unusual, at least those funds went directly into Irish football and into the building of a new stadium.

“I hope that the European Parliament resolution today will help to introduce root and branch reforms within world football.”
